Boston Dynamics is integrating Gemini Robotics-ER 1.6 into Spot and its Orbit inspection platform, with Google Cloud and DeepMind. For a company whose entire identity is extraordinary hardware and narrow autonomy, adopting an external reasoning layer is a real position change.
The concession, and why it is correct
Building a competitive embodied-reasoning model now requires frontier-scale training infrastructure and a research organisation Boston Dynamics does not have and should not want. The rational move is to treat cognition as a supplied component and defend the layer where you are actually unmatched: the body, the control stack, and the deployed fleet.
That is the same logic that turned specialist hardware firms into integrators in other industries. It usually works, and it usually costs the integrator margin over time.
