Kimi K3 and the disappearing open-weight gap — the interesting number is the cadence, not the benchmark

Open weights have claimed parity with the frontier before, and the claim has usually dissolved under scrutiny of the evaluation. What changed this summer is not a single benchmark result but the release tempo: four significant open-weight models in eight weeks.

Moonshot published Kimi K3 on 16 July — 2.8 trillion parameters, weights public, competitive with or ahead of frontier closed models in blind developer tests. Blind preference is a harder result to wave away than a leaderboard row, because it measures the thing buyers actually experience.

Parity claims have a bad history

The genre is familiar: an open model posts frontier-adjacent benchmark numbers, and within a fortnight someone shows the evaluation was contaminated, or the comparison used a stale closed baseline, or the win was on the subset where the closed model was never strong. Scepticism is earned.

Blind developer preference resists most of that. It is not immune — preference tests can be constructed badly — but it fails differently, and it fails in ways that are visible to the people running it.

Cadence is the durable change

GLM-5.2, DeepSeek V4 and Qwen 3.6 all shipped across the same eight weeks. The old pattern was one strong open release a year that briefly narrowed the gap before the closed labs pulled away. Four in eight weeks from four vendors is a different structure: the gap gets closed continuously rather than episodically, which means it does not reopen between releases.

The regulatory collision

All of this arrives days before the Commission gains power to enforce the AI Act, where the open-source carve-out still requires a published training-data summary. The open-weight ecosystem has spent two years arguing that openness is the safety story. It is about to find out whether openness about weights implies willingness to be open about data.
