Opus 5 at half the price — the assumption that frontier capability carries a frontier price just broke
The industry has operated on a simple heuristic: the best model costs the most, and cheap models are last year's best. Opus 5 took the top of the intelligence index while halving the price of the model it replaced. Heuristics that break quietly are the expensive kind.
Claude Opus 5 launched on 24 July and went straight to the top of Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index at 61, with an Agentic Index of 55.3, at $5 input and $25 output per million tokens — half what Fable 5 cost. Both things at once is the part that matters.
Why the heuristic existed
It was never a law, but it was a reliable enough regularity to build procurement on: capability and price moved together, so choosing a model meant choosing a point on a line. Budget decided capability. That made model selection a finance question with a technical veto, which is how most organisations still run it.
What changes when they decouple
If the best model is also cheaper than the previous best, then the finance constraint stops binding and model selection becomes a purely technical question again. Organisations that built approval processes around cost tiers now have processes that gate on a variable that no longer correlates with the thing they were trying to control.
The agentic score is where this compounds. Agents burn tokens continuously rather than in bursts, so a halved price on the model doing long-horizon work is a materially different economic picture than the same cut on a chat endpoint. OpenAI pushing Sol to 750 tokens/sec on Cerebras in the same week attacks the same constraint from the latency side.
The uncomfortable read
Two labs moved on agent economics simultaneously, from different directions, in the same week. That is not coincidence — it is both of them concluding that the binding constraint on agent deployment is no longer capability. When the frontier stops competing on intelligence and starts competing on the cost of using it, the frontier has quietly become a commodity market with a very short memory.
