Halving the price changed what work is worth delegating
A near-parity model at half the cost does not expand what a coding assistant can do. It expands how much of the job it is economically rational to hand over — and that is a bigger change to how software gets written than any capability jump this year.
Opus 5 shipped on 24 July at $5/$25 per MTok, within 0.5% of Fable 5's peak on CursorBench 3.2 at half the cost per task, while Fable 5 went API-only on 9 July. The tooling comparisons published since have been rewritten around price, not capability.
The economics of marginal delegation
Every task has a threshold above which running the model costs more than the time it saves. Bulk refactors, exhaustive test generation, three speculative attempts at the same problem in parallel — these sit near that line and were mostly not worth it. Halving the price moves a large volume of work across it at once.
The consequence is behavioural rather than technical. Teams stop rationing model calls, and the practice shifts from asking the model carefully to asking it repeatedly. Those produce different codebases.
The manoeuvre underneath
Withdrawing the higher tier from direct surfaces while placing a cheaper near-equal in front of users is a deliberate reshaping of who sees what. The premium tier moves toward integrators, the volume tier toward end users, and the vendor captures both without either segment feeling downgraded.
Where this leaves the wrapper layer
Margin compression. A product whose value proposition was access to the best model now competes with a cheap model that is nearly as good. Differentiation has to move to workflow, context management and review integration — and that is where vendor-shipped MCP endpoints becoming a routine release item starts to matter, because an agent's effective capability becomes the union of the servers it can reach.
Cheap models made the assistant a commodity. What is left to sell is everything around it.
