MCP governance and the security repricing of agent access — the plumbing grows a control plane

The same protocol that makes agents useful makes them dangerous, and the enterprise noticed. Security concern about AI nearly tripled in two years. The tooling response — governance, identity, exfiltration prevention — is what turns a developer convenience into a governed enterprise surface.

Snowflake brought MCP governance, agent identity controls, and data-exfiltration prevention to enterprise AI at Black Hat 2026, tracking a surge in enterprise anxiety: AI security concern jumped from 17% in 2024 to 48% in 2026. The plumbing is growing a control plane.

Capability and danger are the same surface

Once an agent can call tools, move data, and — as of this cycle — initiate payments, the question stops being what it can do and becomes who authorised it and what it is allowed to touch. Agent identity is the specific hard problem: an agent acting on a human's behalf needs a derived identity carrying scoped authority and an audit trail, or every action is an accountability gap.

The standard is spreading as fast as the fear. Axonius shipping an MCP server to connect asset intelligence to agents is a small instance of a large pattern: vendors now ship MCP servers as the default way to expose their data, turning MCP into the enterprise integration layer — which is exactly why it needs governance.

The maturation tax

Every technology that becomes infrastructure grows a security and governance layer, because production is where the cost of being wrong shows up. The 17%-to-48% jump in concern is the demand signal, and the governance tooling is the supply — the same maturation the protocol's move to the Linux Foundation formalised, now arriving at the enterprise edge.

The plumbing that carries everything is the plumbing that has to be governed. Agent access just got repriced accordingly.
