Whoever lists first defines the price — Anthropic's October gambit and the public repricing of the frontier

Both frontier labs filed within weeks of each other. The contest was never whether they go public but who sets the comparable. This week the answer got a date attached.

Anthropic is organising investor meetings and targeting an October listing under the ticker ANTH, with Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan as joint lead underwriters, at a $965 billion valuation above OpenAI's $852 billion. Going first is a strategic choice, not a formality — it decides which lab public markets price, and therefore which lab sets the multiple the other is measured against.

The order of listing is the order of the story

The sequencing matters because the two prospectuses tell opposite stories. OpenAI has pushed its listing to 2027, in part because a fall prospectus would put its 2025 losses on the same page where Anthropic advertises an expected first operating profit, and in part because SpaceX's roughly $2 trillion debut reset what a trillion-dollar AI listing has to justify. Anthropic hurries to tell its growth-and-margin story first; OpenAI waits to close the gap before telling its own.

What the public market changes

This is the first time public markets will price these companies directly, rather than through venture rounds negotiated in private. A venture round is a bilateral agreement; a public listing is a daily referendum. The frontier labs are about to be marked to market every trading day, and the valuation math the first listing establishes becomes the frame every subsequent one is read through.

The engine under Anthropic's number is worth naming: a revenue run-rate that climbed steeply on the strength of Claude Code, the coding surface developers rate most highly. The valuation lead and the product lead are the same fact viewed from two angles, which is what lets Anthropic present a story a loss-weighted rival cannot match on the same page.

The private-to-public transition of the frontier begins

Step back and the larger event is that the era of privately-priced frontier AI is ending. Two of the most valuable startups ever created are moving toward the public market within a year of each other, and the one that gets there first will have written the opening line of how this industry is valued in public. Anthropic intends that line to be its own.
