The gap stopped being a capability gap
3.3 Elo is a rounding error that happens to sit on a leaderboard. Whatever separates open and closed video generation now, it is not output quality that a buyer could reliably detect in a blind comparison. The distinction has become a licensing distinction.
Text-to-image took about two years to make that transition. Video did it faster, for the same reason: architectures were published while the competition ran on data and compute. That is the pattern language models established, and it appears to be the default rather than an accident.
Per-second billing is the bigger change
A per-clip price makes video a project. A per-second price makes it a line item you can compute before commissioning — and, crucially, compute again for the fourth revision. $1.95 for fifteen seconds at 2K competes with stock footage licensing, not with production.
When a clip costs two dollars, the constraint on trying twenty variants is the reviewer, not the budget.
Where the bottleneck goes
To selection. Generation becomes cheap and abundant; deciding which output is any good stays human, serial and unautomated. That is exactly where language models landed two years ago, and the lesson transferred without modification: the scarce resource becomes editorial judgement.
What closed video labs are left selling is reliability, moderation, indemnity and integration. Those are real products with real buyers. They are simply not the products anyone set out to build.
