Everyone publishes unit counts. Nobody publishes robots per technician. The second number is the one that says whether this has crossed from assisted to autonomous.
Both halves are true
Coverage picks a side: either the robots work or the demos are theatre. The accurate description is less satisfying — the robots do real work, supervised, on tasks chosen to sit inside their reliability envelope.
Scoped assignment is not a temporary limitation awaiting a better model. It is how industrial automation has always been deployed, and humanoids are being introduced into that same discipline.
The metric that would settle it
Unit counts measure sales. Robots per technician measures whether the technology has crossed from assisted to autonomous, and it is the ratio operators actually track because it is what the business case turns on.
It is available to everyone running a deployment. It is published by nobody.
An integrator running a pilot knows it precisely. That is what a pilot is for.
What would move it
Not better hardware — cheaper reconfiguration. Natural-language work orders attack setup cost, which is the line item that has kept automation confined to tasks that never change.
If a robot can be redirected by a sentence, one technician supervises more of them. That is the mechanism by which the ratio improves, and it arrived this month.
