Q1 2026 venture funding shatters records: $300B globally, 80% to AI
Crunchbase tallies $300 billion deployed across 6,000 startups globally in Q1 2026 — up 150% QoQ and YoY, an all-time high not approached by any prior quarter. AI captured $242 billion (80% of the total). The structural concentration is the real story.
Four of the five largest venture rounds ever recorded closed in Q1 2026 alone: OpenAI $122B, Anthropic $30B, xAI $20B, Waymo $16B — $188B total in just four checks. That's 63% of all Q1 funding in four deals. The remaining 5,996 startups divided the other 37%.
For the field, the implication is bifurcation: a handful of frontier labs with capital sufficient to train the next generation of models, and everyone else competing for niches the labs aren't covering. The IPO market may relieve some of this — Cerebras (May), expected OpenAI and SpaceX in 2026 — but the concentration ratios at the seed and Series A levels have widened to unprecedented levels.
