OpenAI swaps the ChatGPT default to GPT-5.5 Instant
As of May 5, GPT-5.5 Instant is the model behind plain "GPT" in ChatGPT for free users, with GPT-5.5 (non-Instant) becoming the default for Plus and Pro tiers. The non-event quality of the rollout is itself the story.
"Instant" is OpenAI's branding for the latency-tuned tier of the 5.5 family — same base model lineage as full GPT-5.5 but optimized for sub-second first-token response on the most common query shapes. The pattern matches what Gemini and Claude already shipped earlier in the year: the flagship model is no longer a single monolithic checkpoint, it's a family with latency/cost trade-offs surfaced as variants.
What's notable: there was no marketing event, no demo, no benchmark slide. The default just changed. That confirms a thesis some have been pushing for months — frontier capability is now a quiet utility, and the public attention has moved to agent harnesses, coding tools, and compute.
