AMD MI500 series begins shipping to hyperscaler customers

AMD confirmed that the MI500 series — first announced at CES 2026 — has begun shipping to its initial hyperscaler customers. The series headlines a claimed 1,000x AI performance improvement over the MI300X, though independent benchmarks remain limited.

The 1,000x figure refers to specific FP4 throughput in inference-optimized configurations and shouldn't be read as a 1,000x improvement on typical workloads. Real-world deltas vs MI300X are likely in the 5-15x range, which is still strong.

The release continues AMD's ramp toward credible NVIDIA second-source status. With MI450 (Helios) planned for Q3 production, AMD will have three concurrent generations in the market by year-end — unusual cadence for any datacenter accelerator vendor.
