Windsurf absorbed into Cognition AI ($250M, Dec 2025) — SWE-1.5 and Cascade integrate with Devin

Windsurf — formerly Codeium's standalone IDE — was acquired by Cognition AI (makers of Devin) for $250 million in December 2025. The May 2026 integration ships SWE-1.5 (Codeium's in-house code model) and Cascade (Windsurf's multi-step autonomous agent mode) as native components of the Cognition stack.

The Cognition–Codeium combination is the closest thing the market has to a vertically-integrated agent stack: in-house model (SWE-1.5), in-house IDE (Windsurf), in-house autonomous agent (Devin). The thesis: own the full loop and you can optimize each layer for the others.

The pricing convergence is the under-noticed detail. Cursor at $20/month Pro, Windsurf at $20/month Pro, both targeting the same developer. The differentiator is no longer price — it is which agent loop ships first. Cognition's Devin + Cascade combo has the longest-horizon autonomous run history; Cursor's Composer 2.5 has the highest SWE-bench score outside of frontier-lab agents.
