Anthropic acquires Stainless for $300M+ — the SDK-generation startup whose code OpenAI, Google, and Cloudflare all ship in production

Anthropic acquired Stainless on May 18 for over $300 million. Stainless is the SDK-generation startup founded by former Stripe engineer Alex Rattray; its tooling is used in production by OpenAI, Google, Cloudflare, and most other major AI API vendors. Owning Stainless gives Anthropic visibility into the SDK practices of its closest competitors.

The strategic logic is the unusual part. Stainless is profitable, well-funded by Sequoia and a16z, and serves nearly every major AI API vendor including Anthropic's direct competitors. The $300M+ acquisition price is meaningful but not extraordinary at frontier-AI-deal scale. The structural value to Anthropic is the strategic-information access plus the bottleneck position: SDK quality determines developer-experience quality, and Stainless is the upstream supplier for that quality across the entire API-vendor cohort.

The competitive question Anthropic now faces is whether to maintain Stainless as an independent SDK vendor (preserving the multi-vendor customer base and the strategic-information access) or fold it into Anthropic-only tooling (capturing the entire value chain but losing the customer base). Stripe famously kept its acquired tooling-vendor business open to competitors; the model worked because Stripe's brand depended on developer trust that the company wouldn't disadvantage non-Stripe customers. Whether Anthropic adopts the same approach or pulls Stainless inward is the operational question for the next two quarters. Either choice has real consequences for the developer-tool ecosystem.
