Microsoft Agent 365 enterprise SASE rollout — Entra-identity-bound agent traffic, Defender Cloud Apps inspection, and Purview DLP integration ship to GA

Microsoft moved Agent 365 to general availability on May 28 with the full SASE-wrapped enterprise agent stack: Entra-identity-bound agent traffic, Defender Cloud Apps inline inspection, and Purview DLP integration. The release is the enterprise-tier counterpart to the consumer-agent wave from Google Spark and OpenAI Agent Mode priority, and it closes the loop on Microsoft's three-year buildout of agent-aware enterprise identity and DLP.

The identity-binding architecture is the substantive piece. Through 2024-2025 enterprise IT teams' principal objection to consumer-grade agent deployments was the unaccountable-traffic problem — agent-generated network traffic that did not map back to a specific authenticated user identity and therefore did not trigger the existing audit, DLP, and access-control infrastructure. Agent 365's Entra-identity-binding solves the audit and access-control side; the Defender Cloud Apps inline inspection solves the unsanctioned-SaaS-call side; the Purview DLP integration solves the data-egress side. The combined stack lets enterprise IT deploy agents under the same controls they apply to human users, which is the deployment prerequisite Fortune 500 procurement has been demanding.

The competitive context is the enterprise-agent procurement battle. OpenAI's ChatGPT Agent Mode priority tier targets the prosumer and small-team segment; Microsoft Agent 365 targets the enterprise IT department directly. Anthropic's Managed Agents — announced earlier in the month for regulated industries — is the third major positioning. The three labs are now competing along distinct procurement surfaces: Microsoft on identity-and-compliance, Anthropic on regulated-industry sandboxing, OpenAI on consumer-tier-and-developer-platform. For CIOs evaluating agent platforms, the procurement decision is no longer about which model is best — it is about which deployment surface matches the existing security-and-compliance stack.
