Boston Dynamics Atlas production fully committed for 2026 — Hyundai RMAC and Google DeepMind get full first-year run, Gemini Robotics becomes Atlas's reasoning engine

Boston Dynamics confirmed that its electric Atlas humanoid is now in production at the company's Boston headquarters, with the entire 2026 unit allocation already committed to two customers: Hyundai's Robotics Metaplant Application Center and Google DeepMind. Atlas will run Google DeepMind's Gemini Robotics foundation models as its onboard reasoning engine — a vertically integrated cognitive stack that no competing humanoid program currently matches.

The all-2026-units-committed signal is the read. Atlas was the second-most-watched humanoid program after Tesla Optimus heading into CES 2026; the news that no general-availability units will ship this year compresses the addressable buyer pool to Hyundai (its parent) and a single foundation-model partner (DeepMind). Outside customers begin receiving units in early 2027. The Hyundai Metaplant in Savannah, Georgia is rated for 30,000 Atlas units per year by 2028 — production capacity is being staged in lockstep with Hyundai's $26B US investment plan.

The DeepMind partnership re-rates the cognitive layer. Gemini Robotics functions as Atlas's visual-language-action reasoning engine, giving the robot the ability to interpret goals, perceive environments, and adapt to unfamiliar situations in real time. Combined with NVIDIA's Unitree H2+ partnership and the JAL Unitree airline trial earlier in the month, 2026 is the year the humanoid category bifurcates into two cognitive architectures: foundation-model-powered (Atlas/Gemini Robotics, Apptronik Apollo/DeepMind) versus task-specific learned controllers (Tesla Optimus, Figure Helix). The first cohort scales by adding capabilities through model updates; the second scales by adding hand-coded behaviors.
