Figure 03 expands from BMW Spartanburg to Plant Leipzig — first European humanoid pilot inside BMW's production network, after 30,000+ X3 builds at the first site
BMW Group disclosed that Plant Leipzig will host the first humanoid robot pilot inside its European production network, expanding the Figure AI relationship that started at BMW Spartanburg in South Carolina. The Spartanburg deployment has now contributed to production of more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles at over 99% parts-placement accuracy — the receipt BMW used to justify the second site.
The Leipzig move matters because it is a procurement-led expansion, not a marketing-led one. Spartanburg cleared whatever internal hurdle BMW's manufacturing finance team set for moving from pilot to second-site rollout — 30,000-plus X3 units and 99%+ placement accuracy is the kind of number that gets cited in a capex memo, not a press release. Figure has also been demonstrating Figure 03 in 24/7 autonomous operation including overnight runs, which is the operating envelope BMW would need to make multi-shift economics work; jogging-outdoors demos make the social feed but the overnight-run number is the one BMW's plant managers care about.
The deal sits inside a broader Figure trajectory: a paying enterprise customer expanding geographically, a $20,000 home-focused SKU announced for late-2026 availability, and the company's proprietary Helix AI stack carrying the autonomy load rather than a third-party foundation model. The interesting question for the rest of 2026 is whether Figure can land a second enterprise customer outside the BMW relationship — the way Humanoid landed Schaeffler — because a single anchor customer expansion, however large, is still a single anchor customer.
Tesla's Optimus V3 reveal has slipped to late July or August with first manufacturing run on the converted Model S/X line at Fremont, and external customer availability not expected until 2027. Boston Dynamics has the production Atlas at Hyundai's Metaplant Application Center, with Hyundai targeting 30,000-unit-per-year scale by 2028 — but Hyundai is Boston Dynamics' parent, which makes that volume signal harder to read. BMW–Figure remains the cleanest arms-length signal in the Western market.
