Microsoft brings Claude into Excel Agent Mode across 750 million users — first deep Claude integration outside Azure AI Foundry's 11,000-model surface

Microsoft activated Claude Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.5, and Haiku 4.5 inside Excel Agent Mode this week as part of the Foundry expansion, putting Anthropic models in front of ~750 million Excel users. The integration runs alongside Microsoft's own MAI-Thinking-1 launch and continues Foundry's positioning as a model-agnostic agent runtime rather than a captive OpenAI distribution surface.

The 750M-user surface is the practical detail. Excel is one of the largest deployed software products in history, and Agent Mode now offers users a model choice that includes the full Claude tier alongside MAI-* and OpenAI-derived models. For the spreadsheet-dependent workflows in finance, operations, and analytics — historically the domain Anthropic has had the hardest time penetrating — that's distribution at a scale none of the lab's own products has touched.

The Foundry strategic frame matters more than any single integration. Microsoft is explicitly running an 11,000-model catalog with first-party MAI models, second-party hosted Anthropic and OpenAI offerings, and third-party open-weight options. The bet is that the agent runtime — the orchestration, billing, identity, and IT-administration layer — is the part Microsoft owns regardless of which model wins. Anthropic's Partner Hub launch and Microsoft's Foundry distribution are two halves of the same story: the enterprise-IT control plane is the actual market, not the model.
