Gemini Robotics foundation models land on the electric Atlas, separating the robot brain from the robot body
Google DeepMind and Boston Dynamics are putting Gemini Robotics foundation models on the electric Atlas — a model family with 3D spatial perception and on-the-fly robot code generation, whose on-device release made it light enough to run locally on the machine. The significance is the split between who builds the body and who builds the mind.
Humanoid robotics has been organised around vertical integration: the company that builds the hardware builds the control stack, because the two co-evolve. A foundation model from one organisation running on another's hardware breaks that assumption, and it is the precondition for robotics to have a software industry at all.
On-device execution is what makes the split practical rather than notional. A model that requires a datacentre round trip is not a robot controller; it is a teleoperation service with extra steps. Local execution is what allows the brain to be sourced independently of the body without introducing a latency dependency on the network.
The market shape this implies is now visible in three parts: integrated builders like Figure, Tesla and 1X keeping models closed and hardware-tuned; NVIDIA positioning GR00T and Cosmos as open building blocks; and pure model companies like Physical Intelligence and Skild selling no robot at all. The Atlas deal is the strongest evidence yet that the third shape works.
