Meta returns with Muse Spark 1.1 and its first paid developer API — the open-weights champion starts selling access

Meta shipped Muse Spark 1.1 alongside its first paid developer API. A company whose AI strategy was built on free open weights now has a metered commercial endpoint, which is a change in posture rather than a change in product.

Meta's open-weight strategy was always partly a competitive weapon — commoditise the layer your rivals sell. A paid API does not abandon that, but it does establish that Meta wants a revenue relationship with developers rather than only a distribution one. Those two goals pull in different directions and the tension will show up in licensing terms before it shows up in the models.

It also arrives as the open-weight release cadence accelerates from other vendors. If Meta is no longer the fastest open-weight shipper, monetising access is a rational adjustment.
