Boston Dynamics and Google DeepMind put Gemini Robotics foundation models on the electric Atlas and Spot
Boston Dynamics and Google DeepMind announced a partnership to run Gemini Robotics foundation models on the electric Atlas humanoid and the Spot quadruped, with testing planned at Hyundai plants. The deal pairs the field's most capable hardware with a frontier multimodal control model — the foundation-model-meets-body merger, made into a shipping partnership.
The partnership is significant for what each side brings. Boston Dynamics has the most physically capable platforms in the field; Google DeepMind has Gemini Robotics, a multimodal model that maps video, audio, and language directly to control. Neither had the other's strength, and putting the model on the hardware is the combination the whole robotics beat has been converging toward.
Testing at Hyundai plants grounds it in real work. Hyundai owns Boston Dynamics, and a factory-floor pilot is the setting where whole-body control and manipulation have to survive contact with actual tasks rather than demo conditions. It is the difference between a capability shown on a stage and a capability being validated where it would earn its keep.
The through-line is the same convergence visible in the multimodal frontier: one model mapping perception to action, now placed on legs and arms that can act on the result. Extending a foundation model to whole-body control was the research step; running it on Atlas and Spot in a plant is the deployment step, and it is happening in the same window the software-side agent protocols are standardising.
