Mastercard launches Agent Pay for Machines, a payment rail built for autonomous AI agents

Mastercard launched Agent Pay for Machines, a commercial payment rail designed for always-on, machine-initiated transactions — the first-class infrastructure for agents that spend. It closes the loop agents have been unable to complete: an agent that can plan and act can now also pay, with delegated authority, no human at the checkout.

A payment network building agent-native rails is the signal that machine commerce has left the lab. Agents have been able to reason and call tools for a year, but paying required a human, which capped what they could actually accomplish. A dedicated rail from Mastercard — not a bolt-on to human card flows — treats the machine as a legitimate transacting party.

The demand is already measurable. Ernst & Young reports 43% of companies now put more than half their AI budgets into agentic initiatives, and surveys find 85% of financial-services respondents expect agents to initiate and execute payments on consumers' behalf. Mastercard is building for a shift the industry already believes is coming.

The unresolved half is authorization. Two-thirds of those same respondents believe agent payments will require an entirely new authorization model — who approved this purchase, what is the agent allowed to spend, who is liable when it errs. The rail solves the plumbing; the governance of machine spending authority is the harder problem it now surfaces.
