Five separate gigawatt-scale AI campuses come online this year, each from a different hyperscaler

Epoch AI counts five data centres at one gigawatt or more entering service during 2026, operated by five different hyperscalers — each single campus drawing the output of a large nuclear plant. Crusoe alone is building a 900 MW site in Abilene and a 1 GW campus in Childress.

A gigawatt used to describe a power station, not a building. Five of them arriving in a single year, from five different operators, converts what sounded like an arms-race metaphor into a construction statistic — and it means the grid interconnection queue, not the chip supply chain, is now the sector's real bottleneck.

Crusoe's pipeline shows how the engineering actually gets done: a 900 MW campus in Abilene supporting Microsoft infrastructure, a full gigawatt in Childress with Lancium, roughly 750 MW of contracted generation, and a 12 GWh iron-air battery agreement to smooth it. Storage contracts of that size are the quiet admission that these loads cannot simply be plugged into an existing grid.

The competitive consequence is that siting has become strategy. Whoever locks up land adjacent to generation, water and transmission is buying years of advantage that no chip generation can offset — which is why every hyperscaler is now negotiating with utilities and regulators as intently as with NVIDIA.
