Image generation stops being a destination as DALL·E folds into the assistant
OpenAI's retirement of the standalone DALL·E GPT in favour of ChatGPT Images marks the end of the separately-branded generator. Media creation is being absorbed into general assistants, and the standalone image product is becoming a historical category.
The standalone generator made sense when image models were exotic and needed their own interface, pricing and community. Once the assistant can see, reason and draw in one conversation, sending users to a separate product is friction with no compensating benefit — the model already has the context the prompt would have had to restate.
Video is on the same path from the other direction, consolidating into multi-model workflow platforms rather than single-model destinations. In both cases the durable layer is the workflow and the context around it, while the generator becomes an interchangeable component underneath.
For everyone building on top, the lesson is where to stand. Products defined solely as an interface to one generative capability are being absorbed by assistants that have that capability among many. What survives is whatever owns the user's context, history and workflow — which is precisely what the assistants are consolidating.
