Meta forms 'Meta Compute' and lines up 6.6 GW of nuclear across TerraPower, Oklo and Vistra
Meta has established a dedicated compute organisation and struck three nuclear supply deals — two with SMR developers, one with a retail power giant — potentially worth up to 6.6 gigawatts. Alongside Google, Amazon and Microsoft's reactor commitments, the frontier labs are quietly becoming energy companies.
Standing up a named compute division is an organisational tell. It means power procurement, land, and silicon have become a business with its own P&L rather than a line item under infrastructure — and that Meta expects to be negotiating gigawatts for years, not quarters.
The mix inside the 6.6 gigawatts is the sophisticated part. Small modular reactors from TerraPower and Oklo are a bet on the 2030s; the Vistra agreement buys existing generation now. Pairing a speculative technology with firm near-term supply is standard utility risk management, and seeing a social-media company run that playbook is the clearest sign of what AI has turned these firms into.
The pattern is now industry-wide — Google at 1.8 GW with Elementl, Amazon up to 5 GW with X-energy, Microsoft restarting a reactor — and Epoch's count of five separate gigawatt-scale campuses coming online this year says the demand is real rather than announced. The constraint on frontier AI has moved decisively from chips to electrons, and the labs are responding by buying the electrons.
