OpenAI retires the DALL·E GPT on August 30, folding image generation into ChatGPT Images
OpenAI will shut down the official DALL·E GPT inside ChatGPT at the end of August, directing users to ChatGPT Images instead and warning them to download anything they want to keep. A brand that once defined generative AI is being absorbed into a feature.
DALL·E was the product that made generative AI legible to the public — the first time most people saw a sentence become a picture. Retiring the name is a statement that image generation is no longer a destination you visit but a capability the assistant simply has, in the same way nobody opens a separate product to make a model write code.
The download warning is the part users should act on. Retirements of hosted creative tools routinely strand work behind a sunset date, and the burden of preserving output falls on the person who made it. Anyone with images they care about inside the old GPT has until the end of the month to pull them out.
Strategically this is consolidation, not retreat. Maintaining a separately-branded image surface fragments the interface and splits the model roadmap; folding it into ChatGPT Images means one multimodal model, one entry point, one place to ship improvements. The cost is a beloved brand — the benefit is that the assistant stops being a menu of tools and starts being a single thing that can do everything.
