Over 1,000 Optimus robots now work inside Giga Texas as Tesla's Fremont production line spins up
More than 1,000 Optimus humanoids are now sorting parts, carrying components, and running quality inspections inside Gigafactory Texas, while dedicated production at Fremont begins — 'extremely slow at first,' per Musk — with the Optimus 3 reveal expected around the line's start. Tesla's robot is finally a fleet, not a prototype.
The number that matters is a thousand robots doing real work in one building. Whatever one thinks of Tesla's timelines, a four-digit humanoid fleet performing parts sorting and quality inspection inside an operating gigafactory is among the largest single-site humanoid deployments anywhere — and it makes Tesla its own first customer, the same in-house proving strategy the company used for batteries and chips.
The factory-as-training-ground loop is the actual moat being built. Every shift those robots work generates the manipulation and navigation data the next Optimus trains on, and the Fremont line closes the loop: robots building the robots that generate the data. 'Extremely slow at first' is honest — but the architecture of the flywheel matters more than its starting speed.
Context keeps Tesla honest, though. Figure has manufactured its thousandth Figure 03 at one robot per hour and bills BMW by the robot-operating-hour; Unitree ships more humanoids than any Western maker at a tenth of the price; AgiBot claims fifteen thousand cumulative units. Tesla is entering a production race already underway — with the deepest manufacturing bench and the latest start.
