Meta expands its Hyperion campus in Louisiana into a 5-gigawatt AI supercluster
The northeast Louisiana site is being built out to five gigawatts — a scale analysts say could reshape regional power systems on its own. A single company's single campus is now large enough to be a variable in a state's electricity planning.
Five gigawatts is not a data centre in any conventional sense. It approaches the output of several large power stations, and a load that size cannot be absorbed by an existing grid without generation, transmission and reserve planning built around it. The campus becomes a factor in regional energy policy rather than a customer of it.
That is why the political weather around data centres has shifted so quickly. Communities that welcomed server farms as quiet tax base are now assessing multi-gigawatt neighbours with visible effects on rates and reliability, and the calculation is genuinely different.
It also explains the corporate reorganisations happening in parallel. When compute procurement means negotiating generation, land and interconnection across a decade, it stops being an infrastructure line item and becomes a business with its own leadership — which is precisely the move the largest players have all now made.
