The Agent Client Protocol makes the editor neutral ground
Devin Desktop launched with support for the Agent Client Protocol, an open protocol letting any compatible agent run inside any compatible editor. At launch that includes Codex, Claude Agent, OpenCode and in-house agents. A vendor shipping an open protocol that admits its competitors into its own product is a strategic choice worth reading carefully.
Open protocols get published by whoever benefits from commoditising a layer. If the editor becomes neutral ground where any agent runs, the editor stops being the lock-in and the agent has to win on merit — which is a good bet for a company whose agent is its strongest asset and whose editor was acquired.
For developers the immediate value is escaping the current bind, where choosing a tool means choosing a model and a workflow together. A protocol that decouples them means the editor decision and the agent decision stop being the same decision, and either can be revisited without redoing the other.
The test is adoption by parties with no reason to help. A protocol supported only by its author is a plugin API with a formal name. If competing editors implement it, it becomes infrastructure — and that is the thing to check in six months rather than assume now.
