Anthropic names a former California Supreme Court justice as its first global affairs chief
Mariano-Florentino (Tino) Cuéllar joins Anthropic as its first Chief Global Affairs Officer, reporting to president Daniela Amodei. He is a former California Supreme Court justice, recently president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and has served in the White House and federal agencies across three administrations.
The seniority is the signal. This is not a government-relations hire; it is a judge and a foreign-policy institution president taking a newly created C-level seat. Companies create roles at that level when the surrounding problem has stopped being episodic and started being structural.
The timing situates it precisely. The appointment lands amid a Pentagon dispute, export-control pressure, and the intrusion disclosures now drawing federal attention — three separate fronts requiring three different kinds of institutional fluency, which is an unusual combination to hire for and a plausible reason to hire a judge.
He takes leave from Stanford Law School, where he is a professor and senior fellow at the Institute for Human-Centered AI. That the same individuals move between the academy, the courts and frontier labs is either healthy expertise transfer or a narrow bench, depending on where you sit.
