OpenAI and NVIDIA commit to 10 gigawatts, with the first gigawatt landing this half
NVIDIA and OpenAI have committed to deploying at least 10 gigawatts of NVIDIA systems, with NVIDIA intending to invest up to $100 billion as those systems come online. The first gigawatt deploys in the second half of 2026 on the Vera Rubin platform. Ten gigawatts is not a procurement number — it is roughly the output of ten large power stations.
Start with the unit. A gigawatt is the continuous output of a large nuclear reactor. Ten of them, committed by two companies for one purpose, is an energy-sector commitment wearing a semiconductor announcement's clothing — and it is being made on a timeline that generation and transmission projects cannot match.
The structure is the part worth reading twice. NVIDIA invests as the systems deploy, which means the supplier is financing the customer's purchase of the supplier's product. That is a recognised pattern in capital-intensive industries and it is not inherently improper, but it does mean the demand signal and the funding signal are no longer independent of one another.
The first gigawatt arriving in the second half of 2026 on Vera Rubin is the checkable part, and it is worth holding onto. Announcements at this scale have long tails and vague milestones; this one has a platform name and a half-year. Whether that gigawatt is energised on schedule will say more about the buildout than any further announcement.
