AMD commits 2 gigawatts and up to $5bn of equity to Anthropic — with the money tied to deployment
AMD and Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of Instinct MI450 series GPUs in Helios rack-scale systems, first gigawatt beginning in the first half of 2027. AMD will take an equity stake of up to $5 billion in Anthropic, released against infrastructure deployment milestones. The supplier is funding the customer's purchase of the supplier's product, and that is now the third time this quarter.
Read the milestone condition rather than the headline number. The equity is not a straightforward investment — it vests against deployment. AMD gets paid in Anthropic ownership for Anthropic buying AMD hardware, and the more hardware moves, the more of the customer the supplier owns.
The pattern is no longer isolated. NVIDIA committed up to $100 billion to OpenAI against 10 gigawatts of systems. NVIDIA put $5 billion into Safe Superintelligence alongside Vera Rubin access. Now AMD and Anthropic. Three of the largest compute commitments of the year are structured so that the demand signal and the funding signal come from the same balance sheet.
None of this is improper and all of it is recognised practice in capital-intensive industries. But independent demand is what an outside observer uses to judge whether a buildout is real, and in this structure there is less of it to look at. The physical projects being financed are the part that stays checkable.
