Open-weight coding agents arrive with a flat-cost pitch
Valkyrie, an open-weight coding agent, is in a limited test ahead of public release, pitched on giving engineering teams predictable flat cost rather than metered consumption. Pricing, not capability, is the stated differentiator.
Flat pricing is a direct answer to what happened when the incumbents moved to usage-based billing. Metered agents make budgeting impossible for engineering managers, because consumption scales with how hard the problem turns out to be, which nobody knows in advance.
Open weights are what make a flat price structurally possible rather than a subsidy. If you host it, your cost is your hardware, and the vendor is not exposed to a customer whose agent decides to think for four hours.
The trade is capability. An open-weight agent runnable on customer hardware is not going to match a frontier model on the hardest tasks, and the bet is that most engineering work is not the hardest task.
