Meta shipped Muse Image and users pushed back over the use of their own photos
The generator arrived free across the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories and WhatsApp. The objection was not about output quality. It was about what went in.
The complaint is a training-data consent complaint wearing a product-feature costume, and it is the one generative media has never resolved. Distribution across Instagram and WhatsApp puts the tool in front of people who have spent a decade uploading photographs under terms written before any of this existed.
Free distribution at that scale is also what converts a licensing question into a political one. A paid product used by professionals can settle this in contracts. A free feature inside a messaging app cannot, because the people affected never entered a negotiation.
The transparency rules now enforceable in Europe address the output side — marking what was generated. Nothing in force addresses the input side at this scale, which is where the actual objection lives.
