Nano Banana 2 Lite and Gemini Omni Flash open to developers

Google put its lightweight image model and its omni-modal Flash tier in front of builders, with Omni Flash also reaching AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers globally through the Gemini app and Flow.

Lite and Flash tiers are where multimodal generation stops being a demonstration and becomes an ingredient. Most products embedding image or video generation do not need the frontier model — they need one that is fast, cheap and predictable enough to sit inside a request path.

The pairing of a small image model with an omni-modal reasoning tier is the more interesting part of the packaging. It lets a developer route the understanding and the generation separately, paying frontier prices only where reasoning across modalities is actually required.

Global subscriber rollout alongside the developer release is the distribution asymmetry that keeps recurring. The same capability arrives as an API for a few thousand builders and as a default feature for hundreds of millions of people, on the same day.
