OpenAI acquires NextSlide, and the team goes straight into ChatGPT
The startup turned prompts, notes, documents or research into an editable presentation. The team is now working on ChatGPT. The deal closed earlier in the year and was disclosed months late.
The capability is narrow and the reason for buying it is not. Presentations are one of the few document types where the output has a rigid structure, an obvious quality bar, and a user who will immediately notice if it is wrong. That makes them a good proving ground for generation that has to survive contact with a deadline.
Buying the team rather than building the feature is the more informative half. ChatGPT already generates text and images; what it lacked was people who had spent years on the specific problem of turning unstructured input into something a person can present without embarrassment.
The late disclosure is worth noting without over-reading it. Small acquisitions frequently surface months after closing, and the timing tells you more about communications cadence than about strategy.
