Muse Spark 1.2 will get open weights five days after launching with closed ones
Meta launched its latest foundation model with closed weights, then committed to publishing them. No release date and no licence have been named. The reversal is fast enough that the closed launch reads as the anomaly.
Five days is not a strategy shift, it is a decision that was already made and shipped late. Whatever process produced the closed launch was overruled, or the closed launch was always a staging step and the announcement sequencing was poor. Either reading is unflattering, and neither is fatal.
What matters commercially is that Muse Spark 1.2 competes on price, which the closed version had already established. Opening the weights removes Meta's ability to charge for inference on its own frontier model and replaces that revenue with distribution — the same trade Meta made with Llama, abandoned, and has now made again.
The unnamed licence is the detail to hold onto. Muse Glimmer shipped under Apache 2.0, which sets an expectation Meta has not actually committed to for the larger model. A foundation model released under a bespoke community licence would be a materially smaller concession, and the announcement leaves that door open.
