Gemini crosses a billion monthly users — and the metric is doing work

Sundar Pichai announced on 11 August that the Gemini app passed one billion monthly active users, the fastest-growing product in Google's 28-year history and the 14th Google service at that scale. ChatGPT reached a billion monthly three months earlier and was reported at a billion weekly by July.

A billion users is a real number and Google earned it: 400 million monthly in May 2025, 650 million by October, 750 million in February 2026, 900 million at I/O in May, 950 million at the July earnings call, a billion now. That is a clean, steep, uninterrupted curve.

The comparison is where the framing has to be careful. Google reported monthly actives. OpenAI passed a billion monthly in June 2026 and by July was reporting a billion weekly — and any product with a billion weekly users necessarily has substantially more than a billion monthly ones. The two announcements are not measuring the same thing, and the choice of denominator is not accidental.

What the number does establish is distribution, which is the thing Google has that nobody else can buy. Gemini reaches users through Android, Search, Workspace and Chrome without a single acquisition step. Reaching a billion people is a different achievement when the people were already inside your product.

Notably absent from the announcement: subscriber count. Monthly actives measure reach. Revenue measures whether reach converts, and on that Google said nothing at all.
