DeepSeek ships V4-Pro — and is raising prices while Western labs cut
DeepSeek-V4-Pro-0813 released on 13 August, into a market where OpenAI and Anthropic are cutting prices and DeepSeek is moving the other way. The lab that made cheap capability its identity is testing whether it still needs to be the cheapest.
DeepSeek's competitive position was built on a single claim: frontier-adjacent capability at a fraction of the price. Raising prices while OpenAI and Anthropic cut theirs inverts that, and it only makes sense if the company believes it is now being chosen for the model rather than the invoice.
That is a defensible read. A lab that has shipped repeatedly, published its weights, and built genuine developer trust has pricing power it did not have eighteen months ago — and being the cheapest is a position that can be taken away by anyone willing to lose more money.
It is also risky in a specific way. Price was not merely DeepSeek's tactic; it was the argument. Cheap open weights were how the lab demonstrated that the frontier did not require frontier budgets. Charging more weakens the demonstration even if it strengthens the business.
The direction of travel across the market is now genuinely mixed — Google cutting Flash pricing in half through year end, Anthropic cancelling an announced rise, DeepSeek going up. Anyone extrapolating a single price trend from 2026 will pick the wrong one.
