MGX raises $49bn for a single AI fund

One vehicle roughly the size of a normal year of global AI venture funding, landing in a half-year that already set records at $510bn of global startup investment.

MGX has raised $49bn for an AI-focused fund. For scale: Crunchbase put global startup investment across all sectors at a record $510bn in the first half of 2026, driven by AI. A single fund at $49bn is a meaningful fraction of that.

Funds this size behave differently from funds ten times smaller. They cannot deploy into seed rounds without owning the entire stage, so the capital goes into late-stage and infrastructure — which is where it has been going. The reporting consistently places the flow into US labs, compute, infrastructure, healthcare, legal tech and regulated business tools.

The gap worth watching is between the headline vehicles and the median founder. The same coverage that reports $49bn funds also reports that most founders still need proof rather than narrative to raise. Those are not contradictory. Enormous capital concentrating at the top of the market is entirely compatible with a tightening at the bottom, and usually accompanies it.

The structural question is what a $49bn AI fund does if frontier-lab valuations stop compounding. There is not enough late-stage AI supply to absorb capital at this rate on current terms, which means either the terms move or the definition of "AI investment" broadens considerably.
