Separately, Avatar Robotics raised $6.5m in seed funding on 9 August for industrial infrastructure combining robotics, remote human operators and autonomy.
Sensing skin gets far less attention than manipulation or locomotion, and it is closer to the actual constraint on deploying robots near people. Current industrial safety practice is largely spatial — cages, light curtains, speed-and-separation zones — which works precisely because it keeps the robot away from humans. A machine that detects contact across its surface can be governed by force limits instead of distance, which is what "working alongside" requires.
Releasing the robot model openly is the more unusual decision. Robotics has been markedly less open than language modelling, for defensible reasons: hardware is expensive, integration is bespoke, and a bad actuator command has physical consequences a bad token does not. An open platform trades some of that control for the possibility of an ecosystem.
The Avatar Robotics round is a different answer to the same problem: keep a human operator in the loop remotely rather than solving autonomy first. That approach has an unglamorous record of working, and an equally consistent record of economics that only close if the operator eventually supervises many robots rather than one.
Both are early. A launch is not a deployment, and a seed round is not a product. But the shift in what gets built — contact safety, supervised autonomy — suggests the field is designing for shared spaces rather than fenced ones.
