The Sora 2 API shuts down on 24 September

The consumer product ended in April; the API follows next month. A model that defined the category two years ago is being switched off while its competitors ship.

OpenAI deprecated Sora 2 and ended the consumer Sora experience in April 2026. The API is scheduled to discontinue on 24 September 2026.

The trajectory is worth sitting with. Sora's announcement was the moment video generation became a mainstream topic, and the model is being retired while Seedance, Kling and Veo continue shipping releases. Defining a category and holding it turn out to be different capabilities.

For anyone with a live integration the practical point is the date. Two of the alternatives accept a comparable reference-image workflow, so a migration is mostly plumbing, but output character differs enough between these models that anything with an established visual style will need re-tuning rather than a swap.

The broader pattern is the one this week keeps producing: capability arriving alongside endpoint closures. Google retired three Imagen 4 model IDs this morning; OpenAI retires Sora 2's API next month. Vendors are consolidating specialised endpoints into general models, and every consolidation is a forced migration for somebody.

The operational lesson for teams building on hosted models is unglamorous and repeatedly relearned: a hosted endpoint is a dependency with a termination date you do not control. Budget for migration as a recurring cost, not an incident.
