$407 billion in six months beats all of last year by half again

AI startups raised over $407 billion in the first half of 2026, against $264 billion across the whole of 2025. Q1 alone set a record at roughly $300 billion. The rate of change matters more than the total.

PitchBook's Q2 report puts AI startup funding above $407 billion in the first half of 2026, exceeding the $264 billion invested across all of 2025 by more than 50%. Q1 alone was reported near $300 billion, a record quarter.

The shape inside the number

A first half that beats a full prior year is not a market growing; it is a market re-pricing. And the distribution is extreme: Anthropic reported at a $965 billion valuation after a $65 billion round, OpenAI at $852 billion after a $122 billion raise in March — the largest single venture round on record. Two companies account for a share of the total that would be a rounding error in any normal venture year.

Which means the headline figure describes two different markets at once. There is the frontier-lab market, where individual rounds are larger than entire sectors, and there is everything else, where a $150 million round at $8 billion — Harvey, in legal AI — is a large deal.

Q1 to Q2 is the number to watch next

If Q1 was roughly $300 billion and the half was $407 billion, Q2 was materially smaller than Q1. That is one data point and megaround timing can swamp a quarter, but a first-half record built on a front-loaded quarter is a different story from one built on acceleration.

What these valuations are

Post-money figures at this scale are the price of the newest share class multiplied across the whole cap table, and late-stage preferred routinely carries terms that make it worth more per share than common. The direction is real. The arithmetic is a convention.
