The open-weight releases are multimodal by default now

Muse Code, Spark 1.2, Muse Glimmer 30B, Nemotron 3.5 Lightning — this month's open-weight releases arrive handling more than text as a matter of course. Multimodal has stopped being a premium tier.

This month's open-weight releases — Muse Code and Spark 1.2, Muse Glimmer 30B, Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, alongside the Qwen3.8 family — increasingly handle more than text as standard rather than as a distinguishing feature.

The consequence is deployment, not capability

Multimodal capability in a downloadable model means image, audio and document processing can run inside a building that never sends data out. For healthcare, legal, defence and anyone under data-residency rules, that is the difference between a pilot and a prohibition — and it has nothing to do with whether the model is the best available.

What it does to the labelling problem

It complicates it considerably. The EU's labelling duty assumes generation happens somewhere instrumentable — at a provider who can be required to mark output. Weights running on a customer's own hardware are not that. The duty still lands on whoever puts the content in front of a person, but an increasing share of generation now happens where no provider can attach anything.

The 30B point

Muse Glimmer at 30B is the size that matters more than the frontier releases. Thirty billion parameters runs on hardware an ordinary company already owns. Multimodal capability at that scale is not a research result; it is a procurement change, and it arrives without anyone having to buy a cluster.
