Distrust is now a sales pitch — and the middle of the stack is the casualty
Karp calls the frontier labs untrustworthy while posting a billion in profit. Neoclouds buy software layers; incumbents buy AI startups. The industry's new organizing principle: nobody wants to depend on anybody, and everybody's buying insurance.
Alex Karp warned enterprises that frontier labs are too untrustworthy to build on — while announcing $1 billion in profit. Self-serving? Entirely. Wrong? That's the uncomfortable part. Enterprises have watched labs deprecate models mid-contract, rewrite pricing quarterly, and disclose security incidents in their evaluation pipelines. Karp isn't inventing the anxiety; he's monetizing it. Distrust of your suppliers has become a product category.
The insurance-buying spree
The M&A tape tells the same story from three directions. Nscale is buying Anyscale, Autodesk is buying MaintainX, and Asana closed StackAI — infrastructure buying up-stack so it isn't a commodity, incumbents buying AI-native capability so they aren't disrupted, everyone reducing dependency on layers they don't own. Consolidation is what an industry does when it stops trusting its interfaces.
What happens to the middle
The squeezed party is the standalone middle layer — too infrastructural to be an application, too applied to be infrastructure. Record H1 funding is concentrating into category leaders; everyone else's realistic exit is acquisition by a bigger balance sheet seeking insurance. The AI stack is resolving into vertically integrated blocs with treaty relationships, less like the open web's ecosystem and more like the console wars.
The question worth watching: whether the frontier labs respond to the distrust pitch with the boring machinery of trustworthiness — deprecation guarantees, price stability, compliance depth. The first lab that makes reliability its headline feature will be attacking Palantir's margin directly. Nothing in this industry stays uncontested for long.
