Nscale buys Anyscale, Autodesk grabs MaintainX — the AI stack consolidates from both ends
In one week: GPU-cloud operator Nscale agreed to acquire workload platform Anyscale, Autodesk announced it will buy maintenance-software firm MaintainX, and Asana closed its purchase of StackAI. Infrastructure is buying software, incumbents are buying AI capability, and the middle of the stack is disappearing into both.
Nscale-Anyscale is vertical integration with a thesis. A neocloud that owns the distributed-compute software layer can sell managed AI workloads instead of raw GPU hours — moving up-stack from a commodity business into a platform one. Every GPU cloud is staring at the same margin math, which is why workload platforms, schedulers, and serving layers are being bought rather than partnered with.
Autodesk-MaintainX and Asana-StackAI are the same move from the opposite direction: application incumbents buying AI-native capability rather than building it. The pattern across all three deals is that standalone middle-layer companies — too infrastructural to be applications, too applied to be infrastructure — are finding their natural home inside larger balance sheets.
The backdrop makes consolidation rational: record H1 funding concentrated into fewer, larger bets means mid-sized AI companies face a market that funds category leaders and acquires everyone else. Expect the M&A tempo to hold — the buyers have record valuations to spend, and the targets' independent paths keep narrowing.
