The agent gets a computer, a network, and a phone line
Cloudflare is building agents their own cloud. Google is giving them the telephone. The infrastructure layer has decided agents are a new class of tenant — and it's racing to house them before anyone agrees on the rules.
Cloudflare's Agents Week is shipping the agent a computer of its own, a private network fabric, native email, and the ability to register domains from the terminal. Step back and the shape is unmistakable: this is what cloud providers built for human developers twenty years ago, rebuilt for software that acts autonomously. Compute, identity, connectivity, communications — the full tenancy stack, with an agent as the tenant.
The stickiness thesis
Why infrastructure companies are moving this fast: models are interchangeable, and everyone knows it. Routers swap models per call; nobody swaps where their agents live. The agent's runtime, its network identity, its payment rails, its recorded history — that is the sticky layer, and whoever owns it collects rent through every model generation. Cloudflare is bidding for that position against hyperscalers with ten times its capital, and speed is its only edge.
Meanwhile, the phone rings
The consumer side is arriving through older infrastructure. Google's agents now call real stores, check stock, and complete purchases by phone — no APIs, no integration, just the public telephone network as the universal agent interface. It is a brilliant cold-start hack, and it means agent commerce is going live before agent-commerce standards are.
Put the two stories together and the direction is clear: agents are being given the means to act — computers, networks, phone lines, purchases — faster than the norms for their action are forming. The infrastructure is answering the easy question of what agents can do. The hard question of what happens when both sides of a transaction are software is being left for later. Later is coming quickly.
