Forty-one percent of the downloads
Two stories four days apart said opposite things about the same race. Both are true, because it stopped being one race.
Chinese open-weight models passed US models on Hugging Face at 41 percent of downloads, and hold the top six slots on OpenRouter. Four days later, the same outlet ran the counterargument that the US retains one major structural advantage.
Two different quantities
Download share measures what developers reach for. It is a present-tense fact about ecosystem gravity, and it compounds — tooling, fine-tunes, quantisations and deployment know-how accumulate around whatever people actually run, and that accumulation is very hard to reverse.
Frontier training capacity measures who can afford to produce the next generation. It is a fact about the future, and it has not moved. A lab choosing accelerators on price is in a different position from one choosing between what it may lawfully buy and what it can fabricate at home.
Delangue's causal claim
His diagnosis is structural rather than about talent: open collaboration and sharing on one side, building in silos on the other. He is an interested party, running the platform whose numbers he is citing, and both of those things can be true at once.
The claim is testable in a way most competitive rhetoric is not. If the mechanism is sharing, the gap should show up first in derivative work — fine-tunes, merges, adaptations — rather than in base model quality. That is a measurement anyone can run on the same platform.
What it means for everyone downstream
If you are building on open weights, the practical centre of gravity has moved and pretending otherwise costs you capability per dollar. If you are selling frontier access, the 80 percent price cut at the low end is the shape of your response whether you announced it as one or not.
The race split. Reporting only the half that flatters your position is now a choice, not an accident.
