The price rise that got called off
Anthropic announced a 50% increase, watched the reaction, and withdrew it. That sequence tells you who is setting the price — and it is not the seller.
Sonnet 5's introductory $2/$10 is now the standard rate; the $3/$15 scheduled for 1 September will not happen. Two days earlier, Grok 4.6 shipped at $2/$6 with a frontier-level composite score.
Withdrawal is more informative than restraint
A company that never announces an increase might simply have good margins. A company that models an increase, publishes it, and then withdraws it has learned something in between — namely that the revenue was worth less than what it would cost in migration.
The Agent SDK billing overhaul was paused in the same window. Two pricing retreats inside a month is not a coincidence; it is a read on competitive position.
Migration got cheap
The reason the threat binds is structural. Switching frontier models used to mean re-tuning prompts, re-validating outputs and re-testing an application. In an agentic stack behind a router it is closer to a configuration change.
And the tooling is actively making it cheaper. An open router that sends each step to the cheapest adequate model is, from a frontier lab's perspective, a machine for eroding pricing power. It was released for free by a company that profits either way.
Introductory pricing at the frontier is now more likely to become permanent than to expire.
What buyers should take from it
That a published price list has changed meaning — it is a competitive position, not a cost-plus calculation, and competitive positions move down. Which makes the more urgent budgeting question the one nobody announced: the promotional credits on coding tools lapse in September, and that increase requires no announcement at all.
Watch what expires, not what gets announced. The quiet number is the one that moves your invoice.
