Anthropic cancels the Claude Sonnet 5 price increase it had already scheduled
On 10 August Anthropic confirmed that Sonnet 5's introductory $2/$10 per million input/output tokens becomes the standard rate. The rise to $3/$15 that had been announced for 1 September will not happen, and a separate Claude Agent SDK billing overhaul has been paused.
Cancelling an announced price increase is a more informative act than never announcing one. It means the company modelled the rise, published it, watched the reaction, and decided the revenue was not worth what it would cost — which tells you the pricing floor is being set by competitors rather than by margin.
The specifics: $2 in and $10 out per million tokens was introductory pricing scheduled to run through 31 August, with $3/$15 taking effect on 1 September. That 50% increase is now withdrawn and the introductory rate is the standard rate. The Agent SDK billing overhaul, separately unpopular, is on hold.
The competitive backdrop is unambiguous. Grok 4.6 shipped this week at $2/$6 with a claimed frontier-level composite score. Raising output pricing to $15 into that would have been an invitation to migrate, and migration in agentic workloads is a config change rather than a rewrite.
For buyers the actionable point is narrow and useful: introductory pricing at the frontier is now more likely to become permanent than to expire. That is a change in what a published price list means, and it favours whoever is planning a year of token spend.
