The founders are leaving

Hassabis to chairman, Kavukcuoglu to operations, Jeff Dean out after 27 years. When the research generation moves aside, the lab is telling you what it thinks the hard problem is now.

Demis Hassabis became chairman and Alphabet chief scientist on 8 August with CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu taking operational control, and Jeff Dean left to found Discovery Loop with several senior researchers.

Handing operations to the CTO is a diagnosis

Google DeepMind's problem has not obviously been research capability. It has been converting research into products that win the workloads people pay for — coding above all, where OpenAI and Anthropic have led despite comparable underlying models.

Putting the CTO in the operating seat says leadership believes the gap is execution. That is a specific claim and a falsifiable one, and the coding benchmarks are where it gets tested.

What leaves with Jeff Dean

Twenty-seven years and a body of infrastructure — MapReduce, Bigtable, TensorFlow, TPUs — that is a meaningful fraction of how modern machine learning is done at all. Several senior researchers went with him.

Noam Shazeer to OpenAI. John Jumper to Anthropic. Jeff Dean to his own company. This is not attrition; it is redistribution.

Where the capital is going in the meantime

Anthropic is in talks to spend $6bn on a team that makes chips go further — routed to inference and performance, not to a product group. The scarce resources this year are people who can squeeze hardware and people who have built the thing before.

Both are being bid for aggressively, and neither is created by capital on any useful timescale.
